Tbilisi Meeting on Combating Drug Crime, May 17-19, 2016

As part of the project “Police Cooperation with Eastern Partnership Countries” implemented by the Cooperation Fund Foundation as the consortium leader, a meeting on combating drug-related crime was held in Tbilisi on 17-19 May 2016. The three-day meeting (under Action 5.1) in Tbilisi aimed to enhance the competencies of Georgian services in combating drug crime. A model for systemic threat identification and effective deployment of police forces and resources to combat drug crime was discussed, as was the “Intelligence-Led Policing” model for criminal intelligence based on models developed by the British police. The meeting also included a system for monitoring drugs and psychoactive substances in legal circulation. Lithuanian experts presented the national coordination system, statistics on illegal drug production in Lithuania, and discussed international cooperation in this area. The practical aspect of the training was achieved through presentations of cases conducted in this area using modern investigative techniques. New methods of drug smuggling and distribution, as well as ways to prevent drug addiction, were also discussed.
